Swing, Cantilever or Rolling: Choosing the Right Driveway Gate

A driveway gate has to solve two problems at once. It has to control who comes onto the property, and it has to fit the site it is going on, which means the actual answer to swing, cantilever or rolling depends more on your driveway than on which one looks best in a photo.

Swing gates

A swing gate is the familiar option, one or two panels hinged on posts, opening in or out like a door. It works well on a wide, flat driveway with enough clearance on the swing side, and it is usually the most affordable of the three because the hardware and the operator doing the work are simpler. The tradeoff is space. A swing gate needs somewhere to swing into, and on a sloped driveway, a driveway close to the street, or a drive with a car often parked near the gate, that space is not always there.

Cantilever gates

A cantilever gate solves the space problem by rolling sideways along the ground on a track, cantilevered off internal rollers so nothing drags on the ground and nothing needs a center support wheel that can catch on gravel, snow or a dip in the driveway. It needs a straight run of fence line beside the drive equal to the width of the gate opening, since that is where the gate parks when it is open, but it does not need swing clearance, and it holds up well on a driveway that is not perfectly flat. For a lot of Oklahoma properties with a slight grade or an uneven approach, cantilever ends up being the more practical choice even though it costs more than a simple swing gate.

Rolling gates

A rolling gate, sometimes built with a bottom track and a guide wheel instead of full cantilever rollers, is a third option that suits long, straight fence runs, often on commercial or larger acreage properties where a cantilever's engineering is more than the site needs. It is a simpler mechanical system than a full cantilever, though it does put a track or a guide roller at ground level, which means it needs to stay clear of debris to keep working smoothly.

Wood, iron, or both

None of the three types locks you into a plain metal gate.
